We have some interesting Unreal news for you this week!
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 released this week and it is a significant moment for Unreal Engine 5 being one of the first games created from the ground up in UE5. The developer Ninja Theory has a close partnership with Epic Games and had early builds of UE5 before it was publicly announced. Many of Unreal’s tech demos have been demonstrated with Ninja Theory including the introduction to Metahuman Animator which was demoed by Senua’s actor. Hellblade 2 is the new standard for Unreal experiences and it shows that features like Lumen and Nanite are production ready.
Here is a great technical analysis by Ghislain Girardot on how he made strand based interactive foliage in Unreal! Using Blender and custom simulation algorithms in the construction script, Ghislain is able to create foliage that physically interact with the environment. I recommend to watch it if you are interested to see how far you can take Unreal’s systems to create custom tools.
Dimensions.com is a free resource to find the real life scale of common objects and architectural features. When creating environments it is important to stick with real measurements for objects. If the scale of something is innacurate it can lead to an “uncanny” feeling since we are used to certain things being around a specific size. Dimensions has measurements for everything, from doors to animals. It has measurements in both metric and imperial. In case you do not know, Unreal’s measurement system is in centimeters!
See you next time,
Zach Hunter
